Class Description: The foundations of reading will be taught: letter identification, letter sounds, early sight words

Academics include reading and math. Cognitive function is developed through games, perceptual exercises, etc. Computer programs employed to stress skills taught. All material presented with practical applications for the students’ everyday lives.

Social Skills (Dog Safety and People Safety)
Class Description: If you like… or don’t like dogs, this is the class for you!

The dog safety class offers the opportunity to enjoy dogs and approach them (or NOT approach them) in public.
Learning to work together, how to be comfortable in new places or with new people can be difficult. Join us as we learn new skills and explore areas that are challenging in our lives. The dog safety class offers the opportunity to enjoy dogs, area parks and new people.

Class Description: Cognitive and physical development through non-combative boxing training.(We hit “stuff”, NOT each other ;-) ) Students practice exercises that cognitively develop the skills for reading. This is a very active class.

Class Description: Students’ reading levels vary in this class. Academics include reading and math. Counting change, learning about measurements, etc. are practiced as they occur in our lives daily.

Specialty Cooking: “Using Fresh Herbs and Vegetables” June Wednesdays 1:00 – 3:00

Specialty Cooking
Class Description: Students will learn how to grow, select and prepare fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables. Nutritional meal planning, economy in grocery shopping, and kitchen safety will be stressed. Every person, regardless of their housing situation needs to be able to care for themselves to as great an extent as possible.

Class Description: Students will learn how to do fancy cake decorating. No meal will be served, but each students will experience the enjoyment of food that may be made for the viewing.

Cooking on Your Own
Class Description: Basic cooking skills. Actual selecting, preparing and cooking meats, fresh fruits and vegetables. Nutritional meal planning, economy in grocery shopping, and kitchen safety will be addressed. Students learn how to clean up after their cooking, too! A meal will be prepared each session.
Instructor: Millie Rhoades – fun student herself (will begin SMY Law School in the fall!) helping us out this summer)

Fine Arts for Fine Folks Class

Fine Arts for Fine Folks
Class Description: Join us as we explore the arts in museums, theater and the studio. This winter, among other things, we will visit the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art, study color, try our hand at painting and explore the way music affects our brain function. Look forward to instruction in photography and learn how to better use your camera! We’ll also explore ways to display your pictures.
Instructors: Martha Kate Downey and area photographers, area museum staffs, etc.

Class Description: This class will include individuals who want to learn or expand their functional use of ASL sign language. Special Olympic coaches, teachers, caregivers are encouraged to participate in these classes.
Instructor: Vincent Wilson, a very talented sign language interpreter and terrific instructor!

Cost: $10 per class period ($15 per class period for families)
No cost to persons with hearing or speech impairments.

Class Description: Discover science through weather, animals, stars and in the LAB! General health, information about various syndromes, disorders, etc. and what they mean in terms of their own physiology will continue to be explored. Open to parents as well.
