Hello Martha, I would you to thank you for the excellent list of characteristics regarding AS that you've put together. It has helped me alot to recognize, identify and perhaps also admit things about myself. I am what one might call a "residual Aspie", I've never been diagnosed and probably never will be. The reason for this is because I've always been interested in social interaction, languages and other people, so in a sense I've worked very hard to get past the obstacles that can be so very overwhelming for people of my sort :)
Unlike some others, you focus on the positive things about having AS and you seem use it as a way to create motivation, self-understanding and self-acceptance which can and will help many with AS. It certainly helped me. So, keep up the good work and good luck in the future.

Kind Regards

I have a 13 yr. old boy with a partial Trisomy of Chromo. 2. It does not have an identifying syndrome name. He is experiencing alot of difficulty in school due to physical changes and the inability to react to social queues. He is currently in a behavior intervention class due to his "meltdowns" but it doesn't seem to help. He is picking up more bad behaviors than positive. I feel that the school administrators don't quite "get" my son. They sometime set him up for failure when expecting him to sit in a hallway and keep still in order to calm down. I wish I knew of a school that would better serve him.

Hi, my nephew, who will be 18 soon, was tested by a school psych a little over a year ago. The psych. mentioned a possible diagnosis of Asberger's. But because he attends a Catholic high school, there are no special ed. classes in which he could be placed. What should his teachers be made aware of in terms of how he learns best. He is a struggling student in most areas. Also, should classmates be made aware of different charac. of a person with Asberger's. He is having a very difficult time with some students who are ridiculing him, to the point that he cannot wait to graduate in June. Thank you for any additional help that you can provide.

For all of you who are out there appreciating Martha Kate and Katie, let me tell you a little more. You see, I've known MK since 6th grade. We shared secrets and parties and teenage tears and college and marriage ceremonies and most of all... respect. Yes, that's what MK and Katie are all about... respect. Respect for life, respect for God, respect for others, respect for dignity and learning, respect for music and color, respect for diversity, respect for integrity. When Katie was a tiny baby and kicked and gurgled on a blanket on the floor, I could see the planning and the hopes and the joy in Martha Kate's eyes. I shared her enthusiasm for the new little life. Neither of us knew of Katie's impending struggle. But it would not have mattered. MK's love for her daughter, her devotion, and her dedication came naturally with her love. That's what she's telling the world. Yes, you'll eat OREO's in the closet....but look at the results. Katie, my friend, you are your mother's child... talented, beautiful, charming, energized, loving, joyous, and respectful. I will love you both forever. (and Daddy, Dennis, too) Suzanne

I read Oreo in one sitting and wept. Having known Kate and your family since the very day of her arrival, I just marveled at what has come out of this situation. Always knew you were creative, gentle, and extraordinarily talented. But I would have never imagined you would emerge as an author and speaker. As in so many cases, so much would go unknown if it were not for a mother following her instincts. Congratualtions on a job well done--I mean the book and the way all of you have evolved to live with the flavorful aspects of your lives. Mary Ann
